Weekly Reading: 08/26/2019

It may seem like everything is discombobulated this week. Misunderstandings, missed opportunities, even opposing viewpoints are brought into glaring relief against the background of daily life. Whether these problems arise as a result of poor planning, lack of insight, or just plain burnout/exhaustion, you will need to deal with them calmly and patiently.

This week’s homework:

  • Last week I asked you to calm down and breathe. This week, I’m not asking anymore, I’m insisting. Worry and anxiety can wear you down to a nub if you let them, and you will never solve any problems from a place of exhaustion. Unless the problem is an actual life-threatening emergency, take a moment, pull yourself away from the drama, and breathe. If possible, hand the reigns over to someone you trust for an hour, an afternoon, a day if you can. Self-care and distance is crucial if you’re going to find a solution to the problems at hand.
  • Once you’ve rested and calmed yourself, reach out for help. There is no reason you need to carry the burden of responsibility on your own, and others are available to help. Have you been resisting help as a matter of pride or stubbornness? Are you so wrapped up in what’s going on that you are missing the opportunities right in front of you? You can ask for help without giving up your autonomy.

As you move through life, it’s important to balance the desire to be self-sufficient with the understanding that no one does the work of living alone. Of course, the ultimate responsibility for your life and your decisions rests squarely on your shoulders. That doesn’t mean you aren’t allowed to ask for help.

Seriously. Ask for help.
